The Great Cock of the Darkling Woods is one of the Questing Creatures of Fillory, resembling a large peacock. After the Old Gods took away magic from the universe, the Great Cock sent Eliot Waugh and his friends on a quest to restore the Wellspring and save Fillory.[1]

- Questing Creature Physiology: As a Questing Creature, the Great Cock possesses his own magic independent from the Wellspring, allowing him to grant wishes and cast spells even when the Wellspring was tampered with by Ember. As one of the seven Questing Creatures of Fillory, he has the ability to grant those that capture or corners him three wishes. However, unlike his "sister" the Winters Doe, he prefers to empower those who seek him out by sending them on quests that will not only solve whatever problems they face but learn more about themselves in the process.
- Wish Granting: The Great Cock is capable of granting wishes but prefers to initiate quests for his petitioners. Ones that will ultimately lead to a solution to their problems while helping them learn more about themselves in the process.
- Enhanced Senses: The Great Cock was able to discern Eliot Waugh's status as a "child of earth" and a king of Fillory immediately upon meeting him. He was also able to discern that Elliots true desire was not only to restore magic to the universe after the Old Gods removed access to it, but to help his friends and save his kingdom, and so, he sent Elliot on an "epic quest", that could help him achieve these goals.
