Healing is a magical discipline devoted to improving physical and mental condition. There are many different disciplines in this branch of magic that have a variety of effects. Magicians who specialize in this area of magic are known as Healers.
Characteristics[]
Healing is magical medicine, distinguished by its capacity to magically improve the physical condition of the living subject. As with all forms of medicine, it is incredibly complex due to the range of possible afflictions that magic offers. According to Dr. Meers and Henry Fogg, the art of healing also involves the soul, and any wrong step may alter it. Cancer, being a part of the soul, is believed to be incurable with healing magic. It is also believed cancer is the result of an ancient curse. This hypothesis was later proven true, as seen when the old gods blocked magic. Ted Coldwater's brain cancer disappeared but re-appeared when magic returned, proving cancer's magical nature. While the limits of healing magic are usually nearly absolute, it has been shown that god-level magicians can do things far beyond what Master Magicians can do with healing magic, as Julia healed Dean Fogg’s eyes with magic without altering his soul.
The Infirmary is full of Healers, who wear scrubs and are surrounded by various potions and crystals.
As Healing encompasses the improvement of a living subject, it refers to all creatures, including magical ones. Centaurs are well-respected Healers, due to their unique approach to magic. Sawbones, a Fillorian centaur doctor, was able to assist in Quentin's recovery after the duel with The Beast.
Brakebills House[]
Healers operate and are seen primarily in the Brakebills Infirmary throughout the Syfy adaptation, but in the book series, it's merely referred to as the 'clinic'.
Disciplines[]
- Injury Treatment: The treatment of bodily injuries to improve physical condition.
- Bone Treatment: Faye was able to accelerate the healing of Quentin's arm after it was broken in several places during a fight with Penny Adiyodi. She applied a paste that allowed her to better manipulate the bone, although she forewarned Quentin that it "might sting".[1]
- Endocrinology: Magical healing concerned with endocrine glands and hormones. When Quentin was at Brakebills, he talks about a Healing student whose Discipline is "something to do with endocrinology".
- Podiatry: Magical healing concerned with the feet. This includes broken bones, warts, and fungi of the toenail. Dr. Meers was a specialist in this discipline.
- Exorcism: When Julia was pregnant with a trickster demigod, she was examined by Eleanor Lipson. Lipson came to the conclusion that aborting it would require the skills of a Mudang, which she had been trying to recruit for a long time. In the end, the Mudang was able to remove the fetus through an exorcism, but it had become entangled with her soul. This resulted in Julia losing her shade in the process.
- Curse Analysis: When Penny was in the Infirmary after being attacked with a magical knife, Professor Lipson and her Healers diagnosed him as being under the effects of a powerful curse, but had trouble figuring out which one specifically, as they'd never encountered it before.[2] Later, Lipson again diagnosed Penny with a powerful curse that caused a terminal case of cancer on his spine, due to the old magic effects of the Poison Room.[3]
- Crystals: Healing magic that utilizes the unique properties of crystals to diagnose and/or treat magical ailments.
- Potions: The healing practice that involves the creation of magical mixtures and brews used to stimulate a number of effects. Brewed from ingredients with magical properties, potions can be applied for a number of reasons: healing, poisoning, enhancement, etc.
