- "Part Psychic, part Physical. There really is no branch it doesn't touch on. The short version: you are drawn, mind and body, to the discovery of magic."
- ―Henry Fogg to Julia Wicker
Knowledge is Discipline of magic revolving around magical theory. Knowledge students are stated to be drawn, mind and body, to the discovery of magic, primarily dealing with the deepening and discovery of magical knowledge as a whole.
Overview[]
Students in the Knowledge discipline are innately attracted to the discovery of magic. They are considered a bit of every branch with the possible difference that their objective is not to actively practice like other Magicians but to discover, reshape, or deepen the knowledge of magic.
They live in the attic above the Brakebills Library, although with much more luxury than one would think at first.[1]
Disciplines[]
- Meta-Composition: The understanding of the theories behind spells and the ability to reshape them. It was revealed that Julia Wicker specialized in Meta-Composition by Henry Fogg after she was detained at Brakebills.
Possible Disciplines[]
- Several Disciplines have been revealed that could fall under the scope of Knowledge, but are not outright classified as such. Their inclusion on this article remains speculative, and should be removed if proven otherwise.
- Horomancy: The ability to use clockwork to manipulate magic to various effects, including manipulating time. Jane Chatwin was a proficient horomancer, who was able to create a time loop used to defeat The Beast, having learnt from the Dwarves. Other horomancers include Daniel Kikuno.
- Circumstantial Prognostication: The accurate prediction of circumstances, and their effect on magic. The only known magician to possess this discipline is Daniella Marcus, a Brakebills graduate who helped Julia to understand the Harmonic Convergence.
- Historical Magic: Alice's father, Daniel, studied historical magic and regularly redecorated their home to reflect the time period of his focus at the time.
