Template:Item InfoboxThe Buttons are magical buttons which enable the magician who touches them to travel to The Neitherlands.

Description

Buttons infused with magical energy that transport the person who touches it from their current location, either it be Fillory or Earth, to The Neitherlands, and from there they may be able to persue their next location.

The magician utilizing the button does not have to be a Traveler, nor execute any spell, as the transport is immediate and effortless.

In the books, the journey is described as a feeling of floating, that contrasts with the opposite journey from The Neitherlands to any world as when the magician drops into the foutain they see themselves falling from the sky to that world's ground.

History

In the books, there are a whole pile of buttons, and they were given to Helen Chatwin and Jane Chatwin by the rabits of the Wandering Desert, in Filllory. Their purpose was to enable the Chatwin family to travel from Earth to Fillory as they wish, instead of waiting for Ember to allow them. Helen considered them a perversion of magic so she hid them.

Years later, Jane found one of the buttons and used them to manipulate Penny into traveling to Fillory, which at the time was under the authority of Martin Chatwin, with the help of the Physical Kids, so they could battle him.

After the battle in Ember's Tomb, the button was given to Josh Hoberman, who used it multiple times in an attempt to explore The Neitherlands, and later sold it to the Venice's Dragon.

In the TV show, Martin Chatwin was kept from Fillory for a long time, and, seeing her brother's sadness, Jane promised him she would find a way for him to travel there again. The next time she went to Fillory, she caught one of the Unique Beasts, who was forced to give her one wish, which was to be able to travel there when she wanted. Due to this, the ferret gave her a single button that allowed her to do so. When returning to Earth, she gave it to one of the kids, who hid it.

When Quentin and the rest of the group was being chased by The Beast, he found out about the button and Penny, Eliot, Alice and him went to the Plover's Estate to rescue it. The button served its purpose and was used multiples time after the final battle with Martin.

Quentin, while pursuing the help of a Gate Kepper to enter the Underworld with Julia, had to give it up to the New York's dragon.

Trivia

  • In the books, Penny is able to travel to The Neitherlands without the help of the button, due to his discipline being Interdimensional Travel, but he was not able to take people with him, which was what forced him to use the button.
  • In the first season of the show, Penny, even though being a traveler, was not able to travel to The Neitherlands without the button, either because he did not know about it, or because he was not yet enough powerful to do it. However in later episodes, he traveled from there without the aid of the button as seen in Ramifications.
  • It is possible that the Venice's dragon wanted the button because he already knew that he had to fight the older gods, and, although never stated, this is highly insinuated by Quentin watching a lot of dragons coming out of the Earth fountain while fadin away from The Neitherlands.
