Necromancy is a discipline of magic that allows Magicians to raise the dead. This discipline has been banned from being taught at magical universities such as Brakebills University.
History[]
Books of necromancy were collected by schools such as Brakebills University and the Château de Peyrelade, who locked them away in for banned section of their libraries. Alex Nafarro, a former Brakebills student, began breaking into magical universities around the world to steal books on powerful Disciplines, including necromancy.[1]
After being accepted into Brakebills, Alice Quinn recruited the assistance of Quentin Coldwater, Penny Adiyodi, and Kady Orloff-Diaz to summon the spirit of her brother, Charlie, using a ritual for a seance but accidentally summoned the Beast in the process.[2]
Before she was killed by Reynard the Fox, Marina Andrieski scarred her arm with a call number for a book in the Brakebills Library for Julia Wicker to find, leading Wicker to a book containing an unstable necromancy spell that would bring Andreiski back to life briefly.[3]
A month following Quentin Coldwater's death, Julia Wicker attempted to convince Alice Quinn to help her perform a seance to contact Coldwater in the Underworld, but Quinn advised against it, stating the magic involved in the ritual was too wild and unstable. However, Quinn later used a variation of the golem-creation spell to summon a piece of Coldwater's essence from the Underworld to animate a golem.[4]
