Eukaryotic Photosymbiont is a rare species of symbiotic fungus capable of joining consciousness with creatures it infects. Raylan Cortez became a host body for the fungus after traveling to Anansia, and later infected the students of Brakebills University after he was killed by Alice Quinn.

Symbiote Fungus is a type of fungus that only exists on other worlds. It links its consciousness to its host until it is spread enough inside of it to take full control. Some species are highly intelligent and dangerous.
The attack on Brakebills was made by a type of symbiotic fungal spore named Eukaryotic Photosymbiont. Coming from the world Anansia, it is highly contagious and yet intelligent enough to know where and when to spread.
When Hamish Bax invites a magical botanist friend to help Alice Quinn read the World Seed page, Penny Adiyodi has reserved as he is the acting dean of Brakebills and Raylan Cortez is blacklisted after his visit to Anansia. He decides to accept Ray's presence only if he passes many tests to make sure he does not carry anything and, he tests negative.
Reassured, Alice shows the page and Ray attacks her. Defending herself, Alice force pushes him against a wall where not only the body collapse but the chest explode and a swarm of particles shows floating from it.
Hamish explain that Ray must have been infected for so long that the symbiote took total control of his body and that it was a fungal spore, able to transfer body when one dies. Penny is unable to contain the spores inside a room since he does not know how the vent system works and decide to evacuate the students. It is while warning a duo of student that he notices their right eyes is moving strangely and that they are infected by the spore. They request the World Seed page from Alice or they will continue to spread. In which they try to attack the three adults without success.
With the help of Dean Fogg from Timeline 17, they find a potion created by him and Maria Pilkin who manage to expulse the fungus of someone's body but will not kill it. Which means, the spores find the nearest host, going from a student to Penny who immediately shows the strange eye movement and asks again for the World Seed page.
Alice accepts but asks why does the fungus intelligence wants it. The fungus inside Penny Adiyodi explains the purpose of the page which was unknown to her at the time. This gave enough time to Hamish to take some of the spore left on Ray's body and spread them through different Brakebills students. As it is spreading itself it a large number of people, the fungus loses strength over the body it takes over and sure enough, it is in so many people that it loose any power it could have.
