The World in the Walls is the first novel of the Fillory and Further series written by Christopher Plover.
History[]
In 1915, Martin Chatwin was exploring one of the back corridors of one of the upper floors in the Dockery House with his siblings when he opened the cabinet of the grandfather clock in a dark, narrow hallway and slips through into Fillory.[1] The world Martin discovers in the walls of his aunt's house is a world of magical twilight, a landscape as black and white and stark as a printed page, with prickly stubble fields and rolling hills crisscrossed by old stone walls.[2]
During the course of the story, Martin becomes a master horseman and Helen Chatwin became a forest scout. Later on, Martin and Fiona Chatwin go wandering through the frozen woods looking for the Clock Trees the Watcherwoman enchanted and planted across the land.[3] Martin and Jane Chatwin later prevent the Watcherwoman from permanently stopping time at five o'clock on a rainy September afternoon.
At one point, Rupert Chatwin was being chased by a belligerent cassowary when he found a sentient cave that would ask him riddles and wouldn't let him in until it found him worthy. In the cave, Rupert found a mountain of treasure, but only took one item; a golden key, and brought it to a friend that he met at Brakebills.[4]
