In The Magicians 5.06: Oops!...I Did It Again, we learn that whales have made a pact with the Old Gods in order to protect Earth. The Old Gods will imprison The Krakens that are on the verge of destroying the planet, in exchange for the whales to constantly drawing sigil on the bottom of the ocean that keeps the prison going.

Afraid that it might break, the whale asked to create a failsafe that sends Earth back 12 hours to allow another chance to avert catastrophe.^{[citation needed]}
